Ravi learns English

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Ravi lived in a small, tranquil (peaceful) village in India. His home was surrounded by lush fields that burgeoned (grew; flourished) with crops. Despite the serene environment, life was not easy. His family struggled, but they were robust (strong; tough) and hardworking.

From a young age, Ravi was an eager learner. He tottered (walked unsteadily) to the village school every day, dreaming of a brighter future. He studied with alacrity (eagerness; enthusiasm; quickness), often staying up late to finish his homework by the dim light of an oil lamp. His passion for knowledge was obvious to everyone, even the officious (domineering; intrusive; meddlesome) villagers who doubted his dreams.

Ravi’s school was in Hindi medium, but he knew that to achieve his dreams, he needed to learn English. When he got accepted to IIT Mumbai, it felt like a dream come true. Yet, this joy was quickly overshadowed by fear. He was entering a world where everything was in English. He felt overwhelmed, like he was being asked to turn base metal into gold, an impossible alchemy (medieval chemistry; attempt to change base metal into gold).

He started his journey with simple English books, feeling lethargic (tired; without energy) but determined. He read aloud, even when his voice was shaky. His friends at IIT were supportive and offered to help him, which was a huge buttress (strengthen; support) to his efforts. Sometimes, they would read together, and Ravi would ogle (stare at; observe in an obvious manner) their fluency with admiration.

The village was always in his heart. He remembered how he would burnish (polish) his skills in math and science by helping others. This same rigor (thoroughness) and dedication now applied to learning English. He was determined to succeed, despite the deleterious (harmful) doubts cast by some.

His journey was not just about learning a language but also about self-discovery. Ravi learned to ruminate (think over something; ponder) deeply about his future. He often postulated (hypothesized; proposed) new ways to learn and practiced english speaking with friends. They laughed together, creating euphony (pleasant sounds) that made the tough times bearable.
