Building Better Conversations at the Office

One afternoon, three coworkers—Sam, Lily, and Arjun—sat in the office break room. They were talking about how to improve their conversations.
“Good communication makes a big impact,” said Sam. “For example, when we thanked the marketing team last week, it motivated them to work harder. We need to choose our words carefully.”
“Agreed,” replied Lily. “Words can motivate, inspire, or create trust. The right words matter. Think about how ‘Great job on that project’ made Sarah feel valued.”
Arjun nodded. “Let’s list word combinations that help us communicate better. These phrases can help us encourage and connect with others.”
They grabbed a notebook and began.
“What about ‘Thank you so much’?” suggested Lily. “It shows appreciation (recognition for effort).”
“Good one!” said Sam. “Or ‘I really appreciate that.’ That sounds genuine (sincere).”
Arjun added, ‘‘I understand your concern.’ It builds empathy (understanding someone’s feelings).”
“Here’s another,” said Lily. “‘Let’s work together on this.’ It promotes teamwork and makes others feel supported.”
Sam smiled. “How about ‘I value your opinion’? It shows respect for others and encourages sharing ideas.”
“And ‘That’s a great idea!’ encourages creativity (thinking of new things),” added Arjun.
They brainstormed (thought creatively) more:
- “What do you think?”
- “Let’s find a solution.”
- “I believe in you.”
- “You’re doing a great job.”
- “Let me help you.”
- “We can solve this together.”
- “Thank you for your hard work.”
- “Let’s focus on the positives.”
- “I’m here to listen.”
- “Can you share your thoughts?”
- “That’s very helpful feedback.”
- “Let’s improve this together.”
- “I respect your perspective (point of view).”
- “This is a team effort.”
- “What do you suggest?”
- “Your input (ideas) is valuable.”
- “Let’s make progress together.”
- “We can figure this out.”
- “You’ve made a difference.”
- “Let’s celebrate this success!”
By the end, Sam said, “These phrases will make our conversations more impactful (powerful). When we use these words, we build trust and connection. Words matter a lot.”
Lily smiled. “Better words create better relationships. People remember how we make them feel.”
“Let’s use them every day,” said Arjun. “It’s a small effort with a big impact.”
The three walked back to work, ready to build stronger, kinder conversations.
