A Chat About Gen Z Lingo

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Definition /Explanation
Gen Z lingo is like a special language that older kids and teenagers use when they talk or text. It’s made up of short, fun words and letters that help them say things quickly. Imagine it like a secret code that’s easy and cool to use! Imagine it like this, When they don’t know something, they say “IDK,” which means “I Don’t Know.” , LOL means “Laugh Out Loud” and not lots of love, BRB means “Be Right Back.”. So, Gen Z lingo is just a special way for friends to talk and have fun!

Emma and Sophie are sitting in the school cafeteria, enjoying their lunch and chatting on their iPhones. The conversation turns to how their parents just don’t get their lingo.

Emma: sighs Sophie, you know what? My mom asked me what “IDK” means the other day. Like, seriously?
Sophie: laughs OMG, Emma! That’s hilarious! I mean, IDK? It’s like the easiest one! It just means “I don’t know”! How do they not get it?

Emma: Right?! And then she was like, “Why can’t you just say ‘I don’t know’?” I’m like, “Mom, it’s not the same!”
Sophie: snickers Oh, totally! My dad still thinks “BRB” is some kind of alien code. I had to explain it means “Be Right Back.”

Emma: giggles That’s classic. And my brother thought “DIY” was a new brand of detergent. I was like, “No, it means ‘Do It Yourself,’ duh!”
Sophie: rolling her eyes Parents are so clueless. My mom didn’t get “BTW.” She kept asking, “By the what?” I mean, come on, it’s “By The Way!”

Emma: laughs That’s golden! My dad saw me texting “LOL” and he asked why I keep typing “lots of love” to my friends. I’m like, “Dad, it’s ‘Laugh Out Loud!'”
Sophie: grinning Oh, and don’t even get me started on “FOMO.” My mom thought it was some kind of disease. I had to tell her it’s “Fear Of Missing Out.”

Emma: laughs Same with my sister! She was like, “What does ‘TBH’ mean?” I said, “It’s ‘To Be Honest.'” She was all, “Why not just be honest then?”
Sophie: shakes her head They just don’t get it. My brother thought “SMH” was a typo. I had to explain it’s “Shaking My Head.”

Emma: giggling That’s epic. And my mom saw “BFF” and thought I was talking about some new fashion brand. I was like, “No, it’s ‘Best Friends Forever!'”
Sophie: smiling Oh, parents. My dad thought “YOLO” was a new kind of yoga. I was like, “No, Dad, it’s ‘You Only Live Once.'”

Emma: laughs That’s the best! And get this: my mom thought “TBT” was some kind of new sandwich. I had to explain it’s “Throwback Thursday.”
Sophie: laughing They’re so out of it. When I said “IMO,” my mom thought I was talking about some international organization. I had to explain it means “In My Opinion.”

Emma: giggles And my brother saw “IRL” and thought it was some new gadget. I was like, “No, it means ‘In Real Life!'”
Sophie: rolling her eyes Seriously, it’s like they live in another world. My sister thought “TMI” was some tech term. I had to tell her it’s “Too Much Information.”

Emma: smirking And my dad thought “RN” was a new type of nurse. I had to explain it means “Right Now.”

Sophie: giggling This is why they’ll never understand us. We’re just too cool for them.
Emma: laughing Totally. Let’s just hope they never find out about all the Snapchat filters we use. They’d be so lost!

Sophie: laughs For real! And imagine explaining “LMK” to them. My mom thought it was some kind of chemical. I was like, “No, it’s ‘Let Me Know.'”
Emma: laughing And my dad asked me what “OOTD” means. I told him it’s “Outfit Of The Day,” and he just stared at me like I was speaking another language.

Sophie: snickers Oh, parents. And “JK” – my mom thought it meant “Just Kidding” was something serious. I was like, “No, Mom, it means ‘Just Kidding!'”
Emma: giggling And my sister saw “GTG” and thought it was a new gym term. I had to tell her it’s “Got To Go.”

Sophie: laughs They’re never going to get it. But hey, YOLO!
Emma: smiling Exactly, Sophie! BFFs forever! both laugh and continue chatting
